THE STONE ROSES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LIST

                            version 1.01

                         created 2 April 1996
                         updated 3 January 1996

                               *****

On 29 October 1996, The Stone Roses officially split up. Therefore, there
theoretically a finite amount of information about them available. It is
my hope to contain as much of this information as possible in this FAQ.

Please. If you have any information, send it to me. I realize that there
is still a lot missing. I want to make this as complete as possible.

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS VERSION?

I updated the FAQ to include John's leaving and the final breakup. Some of
the omissions in this version are:
		-info about current label
		-known articles about the roses
-took out the random section. not enough info. to make it worthwhile

3. The Releases

3.1 What was the Stone Roses' first official release?

Their first official commercial release was the 12" single 'So
Young' with 'Tell Me' as the B-side. It was released on Thinline
Records with a catalog number of THIN 001. There were apparently
	   only 1200 of these printed.

3.2 Where can I hear 'So Young' and 'Tell Me' without spending a lot of
         money on the single?

'So Young' and 'Tell Me' are now available on 'The Complete Stone
Roses' put out by Silvertone. They also appeared on a CD single
(ORE CD 37) available only with the Silvertone box set (SRBX 1).

3.3 How many albums have the Stone Roses released?

The Stone Roses have only released two (2) albums. They are 'The
Stone Roses' (1989) and 'Second Coming' (1994).

3.4 How many non-album singles have the Stone Roses released?

The Stone Roses have released 5 non-album singles. They are:

		So Young / Tell Me
Sally Cinnamon / Here It Comes / All Across The Sands
Elephant Stone / Full Fathom Five / THTITW
		Fools Gold / WTWIWF
		One Love / Something's Burning

(Elephant Stone and Fools Gold later appeared on some releases
		of the album TSR)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. The Record Labels

4.1 What record labels have the Stone Roses been with?

The Stone Roses have been with:

		Thinline Records 1985 - ?
		FM Revolver Records Ltd.	1987 - 1989
		Silvertone Records 1989 - 1992
		Geffen Records 1992 - 1996

4.2 What happened with FM Revolver?

The following excerpt is from an anonymous document tracing the
history of the Stone Roses from 1989 to 1991. It was found on
	   the internet in early 1993.

JANUARY 30 1989: The Stone Roses and their road manager Steve
Adge drive up to Wolverhampton from Rockfield Studios in South
Wales, where they are recording with John Leckie, and visit their
former record company,FM Revolver. Angry at the label's re-release
of their 1987 single 'Sally Cinnamon' - and specifically its
accompanying video - they throw blue and white paint over label
boss Paul Birch and his girlfriend Olivia Darling. Ian Brown puts
a brick through Birch's 25000 pound Mercedes. "The video was
insulting", Brown said at the time. "Blokes selling fruit, a few
pigeons, some black woman holding a baby, a picture of me on the
front of The Face, a few people in flares... So we went and
	   painted him."

     4.3 What happened with Silvertone?

Apparently, when the Stone Roses signe with Silvertone, Compact
Discs were not widely used. Therefore, CD's were not mentioned
in the contract. When CD's got popular, Silvertone didn't want
to pay the Stone Roses for all the CD's it was selling. There
were also other problems with the contract. The Stone Roses were
released from their contract with Silvertone sometime in 1991.
	   They immediately signed with Geffen.

4.4 How is it that Silvertone are still releasing Stone Roses material?

Silvertone kept possession of all recordings done under them. They
seem to milking it for all it's worth.

4.5 How did Silvertone release non-Silvertone material on 'The
         Complete Stone Roses?'

It is not certain. They either:

	   a. bought the rights to the Thinline and FM Revolver releases.

		or

	   b. pay royalties to the songs' respective owners.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. The Music

5.1 Who wrote the Stone Roses' songs?

Except for 'Second Coming,' all the songs are wriiten by John and
Ian. 'Second Coming' was, with the exception of 3 songs, written
by John. 'Daybreak' was written by Brown/Mounfield/Squire/Wren.
'Begging You' was written by Squire/Brown and 'Daybreak' was
	   written by Ian.

5.2 Why do some of the songs sound like they're being played backwards?

The Stone Roses often come up with another track by playing one
of their existing tracks backward. Sometimes this is a remix.
The most obvious example is the 'Waterfall' / 'Don't Stop' duo on
the debut album. Here is a full listing of the backward tracks
	   (and their forward counterpart):

		Waterfall 	        <---> Don't Stop
Elephant Stone <---> Full Fathom Five
		Where Angels Play   <---> Simone
		Made Of Stone 	  <---> Guernica

# 5.3 What's the strange squeak in 'Elizabeth My Dear?'

It seems pretty much apparent that this is John's finger sliding up
         the neck of his guitar.

5.4 Are there any songs that sample Stone Roses music?

'What's It All About' by Run DMC. (Fools Gold)

'Tunes Splits the Atom' by MC Tunes (I am The Resurrection)
          (spencer)

5.5 Are there any compilations of Stone Roses material?

There are two (officially) to date:

		a. 'Turns Into Stone' (1992) - a collection of B-sides from
the singles accompanying the debut album. Also includes
music from 'Elephant Stone,' 'Fools Gold,' and 'One Love'
		   singles.

		b. 'The Complete Stone Roses' (1995) - a collection of many
Silvertone releases. Also includes So Young and Sally
Cinnamon and their respective B-sides. UK version had
bonus disc with 2 extra, unreleased tracks 'I'm Without
		    Shoes' and 'Groove.'

5.6 What do the songs mean?

The Stone Roses have always declined to explain what their lyrics
mean. And if they do, they often contradict themselves. They
seem to want the listener to interpret the lyrics as they hear
them. They will mean different things to different people.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Other Compilations

6.1 What compilations do Stone Roses songs appear on?

The known (to the author) appearances are:

	     *1989

		CMJ Presents - Certain Damage Volume 16 (CMJ-CD 016)
Track 13. She Bangs The Drums (3:42)

Beechwood Music - Indie Top 20 Vol VII (TTCD07)
Track 2. Made Of Stone (4.14)

	     *1995

GO! Discs / London - HELP! Warchild Tribute (422-828 682-2)
Track 3. Love Spreads (a live version)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. The Artwork

7.1 Who did the artwork that appears on the Stone Roses' releases?

John Squire, the Stone Roses' guitarist, created the artwork seen
on their albums and singles. Here is a listing of the artwork
	   (both painting and sculpture) used:

		Waterfall TSR
									Waterfall
		One Love One Love
		Bye Bye Badman TSR
Double Dorsal Doppleganger Fools Gold 9.53
		Sugar I Wanna Be Adored
									She Bangs The Drums
David and His 34 Misshapen Brothers TSLS
		? Love Spreads
		? Second Coming
		? HELP! (Warchild Tribute)
		? Elephant Stone
		? Made Of Stone
		? Begging You

	7.2 Where can I get John's artwork.

No idea. If you find out, tell me. They apparently gave away
some of his artwork in a drawing in NME. (it was advertised on
the cover of the 'Top Of The World' issue)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Writings

8.1 Are there any books on The Stone Roses?

There is a guitar tablature book for 'Second Coming' which uses
the same art as the aslbum cover. Eric Thompson had this to say
	   (taken from the mailing list):

	   It says:
	   Exclusive Distributors;
	   Music Sales Limited

	   ISBN: 0-7119-5457-7
Printed in the United Kingdom by Page Brothers - Norwich
last thing.... not authorized for sale in Us or Canada

8.2 Are there any book chapters on The Stone Roses?

Sarah Champion devotes chapter 15 to the Stone Roses in her 1990
	   book "And God Created Manchester."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. One Love Story

9.1 What is One Love Story?

One Love Story is a piece of literature that was written 'on' the
Stone Roses newsgroup during 1995. It is far too involved and
intricate to discuss here. Although it is debated whether it is
fact or fiction, it is a good read and is suggested if only for
the fact that it involves the Stone Roses. OLS can be found at
	   http://www.freestyle.com/roses/fans/ols/
