花茶 (hua cha) scented tea Scented teas are made by adding other nigredients to teas during processing, in order to create new and exciting flavour combinations. The most common of the scented teas is the world reknowned Jasmine Tea. This tea is made by pressing Jasmine flowers (mo li hua) into the tea leaves, while they are drying and allowing them to absorb the scent and flavour of the flowers. Jasmine flowers provide a sweet and delicate flavour with vanilla overtones that mixes very nicely with green teas or oolongs. Another flower used in this way is Sweet Osmanthus, called "gui hua" in Chinese. The osmanthus flower provides a very powerful and rich fragrance reminicient of honey and peaches. Since the flavour is so strong, this small yellow flower is usually only mixed with oolong teas. In addition to flowers, other ingredients are often added. A good example of this is Lan Gui Ren Oolong, which is mixed with licorice root powder and ginseng root powder before drying, then compressed into small pebble like shapes. This not only adds flavour but many healthful properties as well to an already very tastey oolong tea. If you have never tried a scented tea, please accept my invitation to have a free sample of any of the teas on the list. Our current scented teas and prices:
