Haystack
I know you don't like those lines
but be careful when you're changing lanes
'cause you know every moron goes out
driving when it rains
driving when it rains
baptised in the dirty water of a midwestern flood
you wear it on your skin like ink and blood
and life is a joke but no one's laughing
and death is the punchline
you've wasted your time waiting
searched the haystack and found the needle
pricked my finger and now it's bleeding
it seems like things always go like this
you get used to anything one day at a time
Horse Thieves
a rich man or a poor man both tell you you can't win
just when you get a hold of something it breaks free again
we're just horse thieves trying to ride the night through
always alone with not much else to do
lost or wondering ride the trains from place to place
i heard the stool pigeon is the coming race
so just be careful or they'll see you for the same
don't ever go back quite the way you came
an honest man or a liar they'll both tell you the same
you just can't win playing someone else's game
some folk will mumble something brilliant while they roam
got to keep an ear to the wind when you ain't got no home
we're just horse thieves and we're in trouble deep
got to move by the moonlight while the whole town is asleep
well it's been a long while and you don't seem the same
you never go back quite the way you came
Working Class Noise
well we're in a bloody drought here while you drink champagne from pitchers
find a job find a mate and teach your kids who to hate
do your job do not cry don't you dare wonder why
just take your place in the line do your job or pay the fine
don't worry 'cause everything's all right
just add your straw to the camel's back
tell us it's for our own good as you crush the working class
shut the factories down stock prices going up
economy never better better to be dead than living this way
prices going up wages stay the same
from the mine to the assembly line ain't nothing changed 'round here
Killing Luigi
i wanted that man to die for what he did to me
i had my heart set on killing luigi
my country started a war and told me i had to take a stand
i said what'd you go and do that for i only want to kill one man
but i up and joined their ranks to see if i could see
from the planes and from the tanks that bastard luigi
i killed ten men and maybe more that was just the first day
then more batallions topped the hill and i blew them all away
i walked among the corpses wondering how it could be
that i'd killed so many men and not shot luigi
yea, i killed so many men that honors they bestowed
then they said we won the war and to me that they owed
i said wait a minute what about luigi
i have not won a war if still that man goes free
something still wasn't right a voice spoke in my head
so i hunted luigi down and shot the bastard dead
the people they were outraged they cursed my bloody name
they said that i had broken the rules of their game
i showed them my medals they just shook their head
they took me to the guillotine and say they want me dead
END. REPEAT.
the end's in the beginning yet you go on
the clock runs slow you got nowhere to go
feeling low in a time that you don't know
and you're waiting for someone to show
waiting for what i don't know
and we build these prisons to hide the fact
that we're all in prison with this act we act
and you never thought about your life when you had the chance
now the world's too cold for a real romance
and there's a three-legged dog on the floor
it can't quite stand never could before
three-legged dog on the floor
The Secret Recording Of Ned Ludd
my wife took ill, i'm twelve hundred in debt
i don't have no land for her grave
and it's dark down in the coalmines
and money is so hard to save
i am just a poor man
i work with my hands
toiling till the day is done
to meet the company demands
soon there'll be nothing left
maybe not even my soul
the cloud over this land
growin' black as the coal
and you can send your prayers to heaven
but someone shut the door
we've been left to our own devices
god don't care no more
the sun it rises on another day
i go down into that dark mine
it's blacker than any night
even the horses collapse and go blind
they stand over me with their rifles
making sure to keep me down
it's time to throw aside your shovels
and bring your guns to town
'cause they made it quite clear
that we're living in hell
and i'll be damned
if i shovel the coal
you can send your prayers to heaven
but someone shut the door
we've been left to our own devices
god don't care no more
no, god don't care no more
Bury Me At The Crossroads
walking down a dead-end street
fighting the fact that you're already beat
one day you're up at the top
next day you're down at the pawnshop
and it's funny how you ask me where the hell you been
they dug a hole and i fell right in
i trip up the stairs and i fall down again
my life is comedy until the tragic end
yea i guess you're right it's a goddamn mess
won't you bring me a bucket when i slit my wrist
i work and i drink and i sleep and i work
i drink and i sleep then i do it all again
i work and i drink and i juggle swords
i go through my routine but i just never win
these shoes are worn straight through the soles
these pants and this shirt they're all full of holes
it's full of holes, full of holes
it's all full of holes
it's funny how you ask me where the hell you been
they dug a hole and i fell right in
i trip up the stairs and i fall down again
my life is comedy until the tragic end
live your whole life like a dog
spend your days thinking you're free
well bury me at the crossroads
where the shame will outlive me
Refill
it's sad and it's sobering it's that kind of night
but that darkness it's so true
you try honesty and you have to laugh
'cause negativity don't pull any of us through
you got your shotgun house
you should have seen me out the back door
but it's my fault already wounded
coming back for more
hey bartender i need a refill
please make it something strong
'cause life is an unfaithful lover
it'll just string you along
Ghosts
the mississippi is inspiration
as it majestically flows by
but if you drink of that water
i bet you five bucks you're gonna die
post-apocalyptic atmosphere
crumbling brick buildings and bad-tasting beer
it gets harder every day
it gets harder to even care
all this running around
and we're going nowhere
everyone up and split
gone to do that brand new dance
no one pays attention to the living
and the ghosts don't stand a chance
the small stores are all a-closing
some big deal done gone down
and everyone is left to wondering
what the hell happened to this town
living in a town
where the greatest things have passed
and living in a time
where things are moving too fast
everyone up and split
gone to do that brand new dance
no one pays attention to the living
and the ghosts don't stand a chance
all the old steamboats
well now they're casinos
and there are a lot of people saying
that's just how it goes
the effects of those hard times
they're here to stay
and the good old memories
they'll just fade away
everyone up and split
gone to do that brand new dance
no one pays attention to the living
and the ghosts don't stand a chance
(more later)
